Exploring how everyday products feel in the hand and on the screen.

Why do so many products apologise in their empty states?

I keep noticing the same pattern.

A product has nothing to show yet, so it says sorry. "No results found." "You have not created anything." "Oops, nothing here."

That framing treats emptiness as failure. For a knowledge network, emptiness is just the start of a conversation.

Better empty states usually do three things:

  1. Name what is missing without blame
  2. Offer one clear next action
  3. Leave enough quiet that the product still feels calm

Curious what empty states have shaped how you think about products — digital or physical.
