Why do so many products apologise in their empty states?
I keep noticing the same pattern.
A product has nothing to show yet, so it says sorry. "No results found." "You have not created anything." "Oops, nothing here."
That framing treats emptiness as failure. For a knowledge network, emptiness is just the start of a conversation.
Better empty states usually do three things:
- Name what is missing without blame
- Offer one clear next action
- Leave enough quiet that the product still feels calm
Curious what empty states have shaped how you think about products — digital or physical.
